fuuuuck. we rocked last night.
the good: we were all totally on, nobody fucked up anything. mel's bass sounded really good. red melon and other VIPs were impressed. tal dropped the double-kickdrum in verse 2 of The Secret. the audience seemed into it. lots of people giving positive feedback afterward. skiz KILLED IT on the keys. I love that guy.
the bad: shitty sound system, but I was in headphones so I didn't care. watery drinks that did not get me drunk. skanky hag woman trying to talk to me in the middle of a song who I had to yell at.
overall, better than I had hoped for. DNA Lounge in January is going to be phenomenal.
thanks to everyone who came out for the show!

show tonight at 26mix. for some reason I'm kinda nervous. these shows didn't seem like such a big deal when we were doing one a week.
i hope skizzo does good tonight. it's always a little nerve wracking playing a live show with "untested elements".
i'll let you all know how it went.

i haven't posted for a long time, so i figure this is as good an excuse as any. i made a totally KICK ASS meal for my girl last night: crepes with chicken, mushrooms and spinach in a parmesan sauce with rosemary and parsley and a lot of black pepper, with strawberry crepes and dark chocolate sauce for dessert. mmmMMMM.
if anyone cares, i figured out the ins and outs of making crepes:
- have the pan nice and hot, to the point where the butter almost smokes but not quite - use very little butter in the pan (kinda counterintuitive, but lots of butter makes them tear more easily for some reason) - rather than using a spatula, shake the pan rapidly to dislodge the crepe, then to flip it, be a fucking man and throw the crepe in the air with the pan and catch it. doing this helps you to feel really, really cool. - 40-50 seconds on the first side, 10-15 seconds on the second side.
i also found out from making two successive batches that letting the batter rest in the fridge doesn't make a damn bit of difference, so don't bother.
anyone wanna recommend tasty fillings for dinner crepes?

many thanks to Eclipse, Spunky and Evil for ensuring I had an extremely pleasant and all-around excellent birthday. eclipse made me a KICK ASS cake and cajoled my friends into going out to dinner. :> and Spunky got me a book i've been wanting real bad (a 1300 page monster of a book, no less). it was great to find out that people do in fact give a fuck about me, regardless of whether i deserve it.
thanks again guys, you are all very important to me.

What the hell, I'll do Monday Mission in the absence of friday five:
1. Where do you go when you need help for web-related problems? I'll just generalize this to "computer problems" and say my genius friend Spunky. Or just relentlessly searching the web. But usually Spunky, he seems to either know everything or have easy access to it. It's scary.
2. Blah blah blah some shit about whiny bloggers and gossip. How do you feel about gossip? Gossip disgusts me. I hate when people try to involve me in it, I hate when people try to share gossip about other people's personal lives, ESPECIALLY in a vindictive "isn't it great that so-and-so is getting theirs" way, and I hate being gossiped about. Christ.
3. In a relationship, when your other takes a dig at you, do you go for the jugular and try to get in their face, or smooth things out and have a calm discussion? I've always been a hit-me-and-I'll-hit-you-back kind of guy, but I am mellowing on this as I get older. It rarely helps.
4. How do you know when someone has lost interest in what you are saying? I try to attack this problem proactively by not really talking to anyone about anything they didn't originally bring up themselves. Subjects of interest to me, I keep to myself. This tends to make for a lonely life, but I hate the idea of boring people.
5. Ever get jealous of the popularity of other blogs? Yes. I spend hours each night worrying that other people's weblogs are more popular than my own, because nothing makes me feel more fulfilled than having strangers comment on what I had for breakfast that day. Sheesh. I have trouble imagining a life so bereft of meaning that this question might possibly apply to it.
6. What is your favorite dirty word? I like clusterfuck. Cockmaster is good too.

friday five...
1. What's the last vivid dream you remember having? I actually had a really vivid dream last night about weird relationship stuff where I was hooked up with an old ex and everything was awful.
2. Do you have any recurring dreams? I used to have recurring dreams that I was on death row and about to be executed; mostly it was focused on the intense feeling of being about to die, of everything being over with and nothing mattering anymore. Haven't had that dream for a few years though.
3. What's the scariest nightmare you've ever had? When I was a kid I had recurring nightmares about this weird animated creature (to my knowledge, I made this creature up) called the "Vatterbird"; it was about 50 feet tall, glowing neon pink, with no mouth and huge eyes and thin black vertical pin-stripes. I would dream that I was looking out my bedroom window at night, and it was in my back yard and about to eat me; I'd run downstairs and my mom would be making spaghetti in her bathrobe (in the middle of the night?) and I'd tell her about it and she'd say "oh it's nothing, go back to bed" and I'd run to the front of the house and it would be out there too. Weird.
4. Have you ever written your dreams down or considered it? I've gone through phases where I wrote my dreams down. Interesting, but not interesting enough for me to continue the practice.
5. Have you ever had a lucid dream? What did you do in it? Very rarely I've had lucid dreams, and of course I always immediately tried to turn my dream into a sex dream. It occasionally worked, but usually ended up turning into something almost-but-not-quite-right. I keep trying to have more lucid dreams but I can never get the techniques to work. If anyone has any advice I'd love to hear it. Eclipse claims she is always semi-lucid in her dreams, she makes offhand comments about changing her dreams when they turn bad.

This week's friday five is lame, so I'm going to do last week's that I never did. Um.
1. What is the first movie you remember seeing? How old were you? What was the experience like? I remember seeing Star Wars in the theater, I must have been like 6 years old. I fell asleep about halfway through. To this day I have a serious problem staying awake in any large darkened room full of people, regardless of how tired I'm not.
2. What is/are your favorite movie(s)? I've seen Apocalypse Now almost a hundred times. Normally I would say "The Player" or "Repo Man" as favorite movie, but I guess by any normal metric it really would have to be Apocalypse Now. When I'm watching it, nothing exists but that boat going up the river.
3. What movie character do you identify the most with? Why? I like Denzel in "Mo Better Blues", I empathize a lot with that guy. I just wanna make my damn music, people, get the fuck out of my way!
4. What was the best film adaptation of a book or something else you read? This will be an unpopular opinion, but Naked Lunch. Cronenberg did the only thing that could have been done: make a movie that doesn't really follow the book's nonexistent plot, but is perfectly orthogonal to the book in a way that really should make any Burroughs fan smile. "Kafka" with Jeremy Irons is brilliant in a similar way, though not based on any particular book or story.
5. What movie are you most looking forward to seeing this summer? Can't think of a single one.
